British High Commissioner, PM's envoy call on Baig

The British High Commissioner Sir Richard Stagg and Sham Saran, Former Union Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister's Special envoy, called on the Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Monday.
Baig while interacting with Sir Richard Stagg discussed various issues relating to political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, upcoming assembly elections, economic development, political situation in Pakistan and his party's perspective relating to the state and sub-continent as a whole.
The Deputy Chief Minister informed the High Commissioner that Union Government has been generous enough to provide adequate funds to the state but the emphasis needs to be laid on the development of power sector and eradicating unemployment, which has become a global problem.
Expressing hope that India and Pakistan will carry forward the peace process, Baig said that people of all hues including Hurriyat should be part of peace and political process.
Referring to the much improved security situation, Baig said that much depends on India and Pakistan and their urge to peruse peace and settle various bilateral issues. He said that the overall development of the economy of the state will lead to an improved living standard of the people, peace, prosperity and stability in the sub-continent.
The British High Commissioner was accompanied by Ms. Victoria Whitford, first secretary (Political) and Sushil Aaron Political Advisor.
The Deputy Chief Minister while interacting with Sham Saran laid emphasis on infrastructural development of the border areas thereby leading to the improved living standard of the people living there, which would also boost tourism and create better relations with the neighbours.
Referring to the national policy of which tourism and border development are essential parameters, Baig stressed on the need to have alternate connections with valley through Mughal road and Simthan road. He said adequate funds should also be provided so that other alternative routes connecting valley with a rest of the country would also be explored.
On political side, Baig said that Government of India should be flexible and carry on talks with Hurriyat for their participation in the upcoming elections. "Since Jammu and Kashmir has a vital importance in the sub-continent and government of India should take appropriate measures for human resource development of the area", he maintained.
