My focus will be on Ladakh's political aspiration, development: First-time MP Jamyang Namgyal
5/27/2019 11:51:32 AM

New Delhi , May 27
Jamyang Tsering Namgyal is the new Member of Parliament (MP) from Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir.

The first-time MP from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won with a margin of approximately 11,000 votes, reflective of the party's growing popularity in a region with sizeable Buddhist and Shia Muslim population.

Namgyal, 34, represents youth and aspirations of Ladakh, often shadowed by Kashmir-based politics.

Namgyal categorically mentioned two popular demands of the residents of Ladakh--a union territory status and development.

"No other party supported the UT demand of Ladakhis, only the BJP is onboard from regional to national level. Hence, Ladakh's political aspiration will be a priority. Ladakh is known as part of Kashmir but that is not factually true. We have a different culture, ethnicity and even language. Valley-centric policies cannot be geographically implemented in Ladakh. In every respect, Ladakh must be separated from Kashmir," said Namgyal.

He added this demand is not recent but "since 1948, Ladakhis have wanted to be a separate entity from Jammu and Kashmir".

"Focusing on development on all fronts. Ladakh is neglected and remained backward. People want change," he added.

Ladakh witnessed communal tensions in 2017 over inter-religious relationships but Namgyal assures disturbances will not last long. "Buddhists and Muslims are connected still by blood and tradition. We celebrate similar festivals. Ladakh, by character, is secular and democratic," he said.

"Ladakhis did not vote on religious lines in 2019 and gave a young man like me this mandate. People chose hope. They voted for the BJP on performance-based issues in education and health in past five years. They realized 'Modi hai to mumkin hai'," added the Buddhist MP.

Namgyal worked with former BJP MP Thupstan Chhewang till last year, closely observing political strategies. He reiterates that granting separate division status to Ladakh in February, 2019 was the first acknowledgment of people voice.

"Tourism suffered in Ladakh due to tensions in Kashmir. The separate division now and relaxation of the inner-line permit by Modi ji will help boost Ladakh tourism. It has given us a new identity," he said.

Namgyal's background

Namgyal may be a new entrant into the parliament but is no novice to politics. Educated in Leh's Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, he graduated from the Jammu University. In college, he led student groups for the welfare of Ladakhi students.

In 2018, BJP elected him as Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Leh, a stepping stone for his political career.

A stunning victory, Namgyal defeated opposition candidates and won 42, 914 votes. "I am not over-excited for getting elected. Job is to be of service before self. People want a servant who helps clean and change surroundings. That will be my focus," guaranteed the confident representative.

Personal life

Namgyal is newly-married and got hitched only three months ago, barely days before taking the plunge into election campaigning.

"My wife is a professor in a Ladakh university. She stays away from public life but is supportive and proud of my political decisions," he said.

As Namgyal begins a new journey-both in personal and professional life-he has not forgotten his roots.

"I come from a humble family of farmers, where the focus was self-sustenance. I owe a lot to my mother. My focus will be to work for people in Ladakh," concluded Namgyal.
