A day and half after the last militant was killed in Samba area, the security forces are engaged in one of most grueling and sustained search operation not only in border belt but also in interiors as uncertainty still prevails on the number of militants who had sneaked in after cutting the border fence.
There are conflicting reports on the number of number of militants ranging from 7 to 16. While the Samba villagers confirm that they spotted four of them on Sunday morning, intelligence inputs now say that there may have been close to a dozen and half guerillas who crossed the International Border on Thursday night. If one goes by statement of villagers then one militant is still hiding somewhere waiting for the next target.
The security forces are keeping a close watch on activities not only in border areas but also in the interiors. There are reports that militants might have crossed over to higher ranges of Doda or Udhampur districts.
There were latest reports that some suspicious acitivities have been observed in Dami Chak area of Samba sector following which a well coordinated joint operation of Army and Police has been launched. Local villagers said that two people had been seen moving suspiciously in the region.
Acting on the reports the joint team began combing the dense forests in many areas along IB in Jammu and Kathua districts early this morning. Police said they are leaving nothing to chance. On the basis of these reports the security forces have launched massive search operations in Hiranagar and its adjoining areas. In one village close to the border the police set ablaze vast fields of tall Sarkanda. The police, in fact, had received information that some militants were hiding in the village. As the security forces approached the village they dared not enter into the fields of tall Sarkanda fearing that the militants, taking shelter behind the tall plants, could open fire.
The joint team fired several rounds towards the Sarkanda fields but there was no movement spotted. Later it was decided to set on fire the entire Sarkanda field. Nothing was recovered from the area after the Sarkanda plants were razed to ashes.
Reports said that the rest of 14 militants, including some commanders, have managed to travel to Doda district where they plan to carry out armed and grenade attacks.
Meanwhile, three suspects have been held in Kathua district. Giving details Deputy Superintendent of Police Khalil Poswal said three suspected person have been arrested by the Kathua police. The trio were introducing themselves as some traders from Kashmir and they were first nabbed by the residents of the Barwal village in Kathua when they were roaming in the village.
The villagers informed police and army and subsequently the youth were taken into custody. Police have recovered cash Rs. 2.5 lakhs from the possession. No arms or incriminating material has been recovered from their possession.
