Need for joint response to tragedies
5/14/2008 12:19:15 AM
The complete peaceful bandh observed in Jammu city, Samba and some other places on Monday, was a suitable response by the people at large against the dastardly act of terrorists, who struck in the early hours of Sunday at Samba, killing 7 persons and injuring about a dozen others, mostly civilians. The observance of bandh voluntarily, without any coercion by the activists of any party who had given the call for the same demonstrates peoples anguish against the acts of violence indulged into by the militants as well as their feeling of personal loss in the killings of over half a dozen people including a photo journalist and two political activists. Innumerable messages of condemnation of the cowardly act of the militants and condolences over the loss of valuable human lives are a natural response to these unfortunate happening, by cross section of the people. But the attempts made by the political parties and their leaders to politicize these killings and try to drive political millage out of the loss of human lives and sufferings only betrays their cheapness and perverted mindset to try to make political gain out of the tragic happenings and get cheap publicity. A crude attempt to outshine and outwit each other by stealing the march in giving the call for bandh by various political parties and later to claim the success of the same as a proof of their strength and following by various political groups was clearly visible. Various political groups in Jammu, including those who have hardly any supporters and following here came out with the statement hailing Jammuites for observing the bandh and interpreting the same as people's response to their call. Politics should be kept aside at least in such events of over all mourning and sense of loss of valuable human lives. There should be a collective response from all the political groups, who should organize joint condolence meeting to mourn the demise of people killed either in a natural calamity or in militant attacks. While the blame making by the opposition parties against the ruling parties of their failure to protect the lives of innocent people and even of security laps responsible for taking place of such incidents may have some justification in a democratic set up, but at least the mourning of the loss of human lives should form a common response by rival political parties and groups. In fact the common man has the positive attitude and displays its genuine response to such gory incidents and poignant situations, whereas the politicians try to measure such human sufferings in terms of political game which accrues to them out of the same. This attitude of the politicians is abhorred by the people at large.
