| State poised for big stride in tech edu at door-steps: Sinha | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 14 Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha today said that Jammu and Kashmir is poised for a big stride in the extension of higher and technical education with impetus on job oriented courses. With 8 varsities for a population of ten millions, the educational scenario is favourable, which needs to be sustained and taken to pinnacles of excellence of international standards, the Governor said while addressing the students, staff, faculty and Board of Directors of Islamic University of Science and Technology at Awantipura in Pulwama district this morning. The Governor said that public private participation in the spread of education in the State has been far better than any other State of the country, as four of these Universities are run in the private sector. He referred to the setting up of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri and Islamic University of Science and Technology in Awantipur and the oncoming International Islamic University in Budgam district. He expressed satisfaction over imparting degrees in modern courses by these varsities with due emphasis on moral and philosophical education. In this regard, he also made a mention of Institute of Kashmir Studies having been set up in the University of Kashmir for promotion of Kashmiri language, culture, philosophy all encompassed within the concept of Kashmiriyat. 'Alongside technical education, values have to be imbibed to the young generation', he added General Sinha elaborately dwelt on the evolution of Universities and said this concept emerged from India which had Nalanda, Takshala and Sharda Peeth Universities where students from different parts of the world used to throng for education. The West got its first university at Salamanca in Spain in the 11the century, he said, adding that the educational scenario has undergone a revolutionary change over the decades. There has been a shift towards professional and technical education so as to train school pass outs with the market oriented skills at the degree level. "We have to keep pace with the changing times'; he said and expressed happiness over Islamic University providing technical education. On unemployment, he said that it would not be possible for the Government sector to provide jobs to all but the corporate sector holds a key to this vexed problem. He said the pass outs will have numerous opportunities available in the corporate sector all over the country and made a mention of 100 per cent placements for the first two batches of MBA discipline of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. Answering another question, the Governor said: "Today we live in the Age of Knowledge. Acquisition of knowledge is the imperative of modern time. Knowledge unlike all other assets is imperishable. In the early medieval period the Arabs had carried the light of Knowledge to Spain which they ruled for 800 years. This brought about Renaissance and Europe emerged from the Age of Darkness. In late medieval and early modern period Asia lagged behind in Knowledge but that process is getting reversed." |
