Lecture on “Revisiting Sarasvati Civilization” delivered

Department of History, University of Jammu today organized a lecture as a part of series of lecturers on Indian Archeology. The lecture was delivered by Dr. S. Kalyanraman at present working on Sarasvati River through the Sarasvati Research Centre, Scholars on “Revisiting Sarasvati Civilization”. The function was inaugurated with the welcoming of the distinguished dignitaries on the stage. The speaker Dr. S. Kalyanraman was felicitate with the presentation of Shawl by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof. Amitab Mattoo.
In the welcome address, the HOD Department of History, Prof. Nirmal Singh lauding the research carried out by Dr. S. Kalyanraman referred to him as a versatile person who has given a new dimension to the concept of Sarasvati Culture. Prof. Nirmal Singh on behalf of the department of History welcomed the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof. Amitab Mattoo and also University Fraternity both teaching and non-teaching, members of civil society and media persons. The welcome address was followed by a brief presentation on the aim of the lecture series on Indian Archaeology by Prof. Suman Jamwal. She highlighted that there was urgent need to hold a lecture series because archaeological data can be an important evidence to understand and place the history of any region in proper historical perspective. Prof. Amitab Mattoo the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor in his opening remarks appreciated the efforts of the department of history taking initiative in organizing such series of lectures on archaeology. He also suggested that the department in future should also host lectures and seminars on themes which have contemporary relevance. He also appreciated Dr. S. Kalyanraman for his heart breaking research.
Dr. S. Kalyanraman, in his thought provoking lecture supported with power point presentation tried to elucidate his lecture on “Revisiting Sarasvati Civilization”. He combined in his lecture the findings of archaeologists, Paleobotanists, Geomorphologists etc. Putting all these findings together he talked about the discovery of “Sarasvati River”, which has been referred in the Vedic literature. He also pointed out that the lead provided by continuing research points to the existence of a large cultural complex around the river. He also pointed out that there is a need to reorient history and its Chronology in the light of new evidences. It also, as he pointed out may demolish the myth of Hindu identity being invented. The other significant aspect of speech was the hydraulic power of the river itself. In his understanding, it is the river recharged dam and if used scientifically, can turn the desert area of Rajasthan into a green patch. The lecture closed with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sharda Sharma. The entire proceeding was conducted by Dr. Madhulika and Dr. Versha Gupta.
