| Hi-tech buses for Jammu, Srinagar | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 15 Jammu and Kashmir government today announced introduction of hi-tech buses in Jammu city and Srinagar to provide better transport facilities to tourists along with a slew of other measures to serve its residents better. Hi-tech buses would ply in Jammu and Srinagar - winter and summer capital of the state, respectively - to provide a better transport facility to the tourists, transport minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen said addressing an official meet here. Issuance of smart cards based licenses to the drivers is in the offing, he said adding the drivers operating in hilly districts of Rajouri, Poonch and Ramban would be asked to undergo a medical check up to ensure safe driving. In an effort to streamline the procedure for issuance of licenses and route permits, a single window system has been introduced which authorises the Regional Transport Authorities to issue the relevant documents to the transporters. The ministry is also mulling options to give a special package to local transporters to provide better transport facilities to the people in rural areas, the minister said. The transport department has realised a revenue of Rs 71 crore during last financial year, the minister said adding that more steps would be taken to strengthen the infrastructure and functioning of Motor Vehicles Department to serve the people of the state better. |
