| Sonia, Rahul to address pre-poll rallies in UP | | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, Jult 7: Congress party's 'Rajmata' and her parliamentarian son, Rahul Gandhi, have planned to address a series of pre-poll rallies in election-bound Uttar Pradesh. Clearly, Sonia Gandhi's strategy is to add more importance--strictly in politcal sense-- to her son. The mother and son duo, seen as the best bet for Congress, will address at least eight rallies in different parts of the all-important State of Utar Pradesh (UP) in September. While Rahul has shared the dais with his mother in the past, this will be the first time that he will address public rallies in her presence. The idea is to put the best foot forward, galvanise the party before the elections are announced and at the same time groom Rahul as a mass leader, the role the party wants him to play. The Congress party is desperately seeking to groom another leader with pan-India appeal in order to lessen the burden on Sonia before next general elections due in mid-2009. According to Congress sources, the blueprint for Uttar Pradesh polls was finalised during a meeting chaired by Sonia on Tuesday (July 4). She will kick-start her party's campaign at the end of the month, when she is to address a convention of block level leaders in Lucknow.
