More infiltration bids feared

Close on the heels of the Samba encounter between security forces and infiltrators, there are fears in the defence establishments here that there may be more infiltration bids from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in a bid to sabotage the Amarnath yatra and the Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
An estimated 1,600 militants, heavily armed and highly trained in jungle and sabotage warfare, were being hosted in over 30 launching pads and 25 militant training camps in Pakistan and PoK areas to enter into J and K this summer for "border engagements" on the pattern of Samba, defence sources said here.
Quoting from latest intelligence reports and after analysing various sources of information and activities along the Indo-Pak border, the sources warned of more such Samba-type engagement in order to infiltrate heavily-armed and highly- trained militants in bigger groups into J and K.
It may be recalled that a group of militants, assisted by the Pakistani Rangers engaged a BSF patrol party and a listening post by firing hundreds of rifle and tracer rounds, busting 23 grenades on Baingallard border outpost in Samba sector on Friday last and facilitated a group of 10 armed militants in J and K.
Giving details, the sources said that over 450 militants were being hosted along the 210-km long international border (IB) near Jammu, Samba and Kathua sectors ready to enter the state. Another 1,000 such militants were kept ready along the Line of Control (LoC) in PoK and Pakistan, they said.
Maintaining that terror camps and launching pads were active with militant presence, defence spokesman Lt Col S D Goswswami said that infiltration is likely to increase during the summer.
"Pakistan retains the ability to calibrate the intensity of the proxy war, which had of late dwindled. But high-level vigilance is being maintained along the border so that infiltration from PoK is minimised", he said.
Defence sources said that about 300 militants were located along the LoC in Chirat-Hajira-Goi-Kahuta-Sensa belt of PoK opposite Poonch to enter Jammu and Kashmir.
Similarly, 150-155 such miltiants were staying in launching pads and militant training camps Kotli (PoK), 400-410 in Nakial-Mirpur-Mindi belt (PoK) near Rajouri sector, 260-265 in Mamana-Garnun-Samani-Kudiali (PoK), the sources said.
Besides this, 450-475 assessed miltiant area staged in sailkote, zafarwal, maharajka, jalapur, mursa, dinga, kunjah, harar, chawindra and dhallaup areas along ib oppsoite akhnoor, r s pura, ramgarh, samba, hiranagar and kathua sub-sectors.
Apprehending samba type of infiltrations, security agencies have activated multi-tier security set up along Indo-Pak border to foil the militants plans.
Army, BSF and police in LoC and IB areas have been asked to maintain high vigilance round the clock and village defence committees (vdcs) along indo-pak border have been asked to go for night patrols in border hamlets, the sources said.
Army has increased the guard along LoC by inducting 3 more units of Rastriya Rifles drawn from counter insurgecny security grid in in-depth areas of Surankote and deployed them for border guard duty along LoC in Rajouri and Poonch sectors to plug gaps, infiltration routes and strength defences.
Besides, the BSF is also deploying four more companies along IB to plug infiltration routes from PoK.
