| Surprise checks against tax evaders to continue: Inderjeet | | Goods worth over Rs.2 lakhs seized; heavy penalty imposed on defaulters

Early Times Reporter Jammu May 17 During surprise checking the sleuths of Commercial Taxes Check Post Lakhanpur seized goods worth Rs.2.06 lakhs and imposed penalty of Rs.1,52,362 on the defaulters. Deputy Commissioner Inderjeet Singh said that the sleuths of Lakhanpur check post under his direct supervision laid a naka and conducted surprise checking of small vehicles yesterday afternoon. During the operation, small load carriers like Mahindra, pickups/Tata Mobile, vans and cars were checked and found carrying large quantity of taxable goods including battery chargers, cosmetics, toys, readymade garments, construction material, bearings, photographic goods and packing material into the state and were trying to evade payment of taxes. He said goods worth Rs.2,06,497 were seized under various sections of J&K VAT Act and penalty and security amounting to Rs.1,25,326 was imposed on the defaulters before release of goods. The Deputy Commissioner further said that one white Indica car bearing registration No JK02AC-0619 owned by Sharad Kumar of Jammu on signaling to halt did not stop and fled away without clearance. He was chased by the sleuths who succeeded in apprehending him near Jatwal Police post and brought back to check post. The vehicle was seized and on verification cosmetic goods were found in the car. A penalty/security of Rs.85,894 was imposed on the defaulter. The Deputy Commissioner has reiterated to continue such special checking to arrest the attempts by unscrupulous persons who are habitual of evading payment of taxes while importing taxable goods into the state in their private cars/vehicles.
