| BJP demands opening of Poonch-Uri road via Haji Pir | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 17
After PDP and National Conference now it is the turn of BJP to demand opening of one of their favourite road link to Kashmir- Poonch-Uri road via Haji Pir. Once thrown open it will be an all-weather road and shortest route between Poonch and Uri. In a press statement senior BJP Vice President and party spokesperson Prof Hari Om on Saturday said that BJP would welcome initiative of the Government of India if it pushes forward separate proposal to reopen Poonch-Uri road via Haji Pir. It will be a greatest Confidence Building Measure (CBM) if the Government of India could make the Pakistani government to reopen the Poonch-Uri route via Haji Pir stretch which is with Pakistan since 1965, Prof Hari Om said. If the Government of India can go in for reopening the Uri-Muzaffrabad road and Poonch-Rawlakot road and think in terms of reopening Suchetgarh-Sialkot road, then why can’t it ask Pakistan to reopen the Poonch-Uri road through Haji Pir for the benefit of the people?, Prof. Hari Om asked. Commenting on the feasibility of the Mughal Road connecting Rajouri-Poonch with Kashmir, Prof. Hari Om said it would be only appropriate if the Congress-led government reviews its whole policy in the light of the fact that the said road will be seasonal, as against all weather. He said the Mughal Road would remain close for six months every year during winter because of very heavy snowfall on the Pir Panjal. At the same time, however, he suggested that Mughal road can be used for Elephant Safari tourism by recreating in the 21st century the medieval Mughal era. He said such a policy would induce a lot many foreigners to visit the area, thus leading to the economic prosperity of the people of the region.
