| Rajouri registers record achievement in cocoon production | | | RAJOURI, AUGUST 30: With the adoption of twin strategies of upgrading the skills of cocoon farmers through sustained awareness camps and providing marketing cover for their produce, the cocoon production in Rajouri district has risen to all time high of 81,000 kgs enabling the rears to reap the ever high cocoon prices of Rs. 413 per kg this year. The feat was accomplished in the recently organized open auction cocoon market by Sericulture department at Nowshera and Sunderbani, which was inaugurated by the District Development Commissioner, Mr. Parvez Malik. As many as 6000 cocoon rearing farmers of the district sold their produce worth Rs. 2.40 crore in the month long market registering thereby a steep increase of Rs. one crore during their annual turn over. The district has achieved the distinction of fetching the highest price of Rs. 413 per kg. in the state due to market improvement in the quality and texture of its cocoon production. In all 80 cocoon buyers mostly from West Bengal besides a dozen local rearing units participated in the purchase transaction in the month long sale market. The Deputy Director Sericulture Rajouri attributed the price boom to the introduction of high yielding CSR hybrids coupled with extension of technical assistance to cocoon rearers on regular basis. He said the department has fixed a target of covering 370 beneficiaries under the centrally sponsored scheme this year under which these will be provided rearing kits besides undertaking upgradation of their rearing accommodation. It is worthwhile to mention here that department supplies CGI sheets worth Rs. 10,000 under rearing upgradation apart from rearing kits including trays, stands, saggri, thermometer costing Rs. 3750 to each beneficiaries under the scheme. |
