| Karra's tirade against VO termed as vilification | | |

The tirade launched by the senior PDP Minister for Finance, Housing and Urban Development Tariq Hamid Karra against the State Vigilance Organisation has been characterized by the sources in the anti corruption organization as an attempt at vilification of the agency, which has been working directly under the supervision of the Chief Minister and which has stepped up its move lately to book the corrupt officials, using underhand means. On the other hand the political parties and leaders of various Jammu based political groups have taken strong exception to the Finance Minister publically complaining of the anti corruption agency of the state working with a bias against the officers belonging to Kashmir and those belonging to a particular community.
On condition of anonymity an officer in the State Vigilance Department expressed regret that the minister concerned, who belongs to the PDP, has tried to implicitly hit at the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and latter's stepped up anti corruption drive. But in the process, he has unfortunately sought to make the Vigilance Organisation target of his direct attack. Such statements by a senior minister in the government go to demoralize the officials working to find chinks in the working of some departments and some unscrupulous officials by successfully investigating their underhand deeds.
The ministers and other politicians particularly those in the ruling dispensation invariably come out to provide cover to the misdeeds of their favorites, through various means, but the public denouncement by Karra of the vigilance agency charging it of sabotaging the development works in Kashmir valley is perhaps unprecedented. However, according to the sources it is not for the first time that Karra has sharply criticized the working of State Vigilance Organisation, charging it of selectively booking the officers belonging to Kashmir and to a particular religious community. Mr. Karra's tirade and imaginary grouse of anti Kashmiri bias by the anti corruption agency is in keeping with the latest wolf cry by many Kashmiri leaders both separatists and those in the mainstream parties as well as a section of opinion builders, like columnists contributing regularly in the Kashmir newspapers and a section of so called intelligentsia in Kashmir speaking in the seminars, about Kashmir being discriminated in all the fields, while Jammu getting the preferential treatment in development activities as well as price postings. The print media in Kashmir has virtually launched a campaign against so called neglect of Kashmir valley in developmental activities as well as raw deal being meted out to Kashmiri officials in the government services. Even in the matter of transfers and postings, it is alleged that while officers from Jammu are being posted at key positions, those from Kashmir region are posted at a comparatively less important positions.
The Jammu based political leaders and even the commoners read in it an exercise to resort to offense as a best means for defense. They assert that the boot is rather on the other leg and the figures speak for themselves and amply confirm the raw deal being perpetually meted out to Jammu region in all the fields, including in the developmental activities as well as their less proportionate presence in the civil secretariat, both in the gazatted cadre as well as in the clerical staff and in other important departments.
