| Financial assistance provided to handloom societies | | | SRINAGAR, AUGUST 30 – The Department of Hanmdloom today organized a public function at SKICC for distributing financial assistance to handloom cooperative societies. On the occasion Bank Drafts amounting to Rs. 147.43 lakh were distributed amongst the 92 primary handloom cooperative societies under M.D.A scheme for the years 1996-97 to 1999-2000 besides, reimbursement of one time rebate of 10 percent given by the handloom agencies for sale of handloom cloth during the years 2002-03 to 2004-05. The assistance has been given under central sector plan. Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce Mr. S. S. Kapoor while appreciating the role of Handloom sector in state economy urged the weavers community to concentrate more on producing value added items as per the trends in domestic and in export markets. He said this could be done by adopting product diversification, design development and quality control . Director Handloom Miss Nirmal Sharma, Managing Director Handloom Development Corporation Mr. Zahid Hussain, Joint Director Handloom Deputy Director weavers Service centre, Srinagar and other officers of the department attended the function. Director Handloom presented a brief note on the various infrastructural development schemes, marketing incentives welfare schemes implemented by the department and measures taken up for skill upgradation of the artisans . She informed the participants that Handloom department plays a crucial role in employment generation for the weaker section of society in rural areas of J&K State, besides producing textile worth Rs. 35 crore annually. The Handlom Industry is known for Pashmina Shawls, Kani Shawls, Silk Sarees, Kishtwari blankets, Loies, Patos, running cotton and raffal cloth, cotton bed sheets, Masnands, etc. |
