Mir's JKDP alone has greater scope than others for accommodating defectors

Leadership of several mainstream political parties keep their fingers crossed over the possibility of defections from one side to the other the moment candidates are selected for the ensuing Assembly poll. If not anybody else Ghulam Hassan Mir,who heads the recently floated Jammu Kashmir Democratic Party(JKDP) is waiting for political leaders from the PDP,the Congress and the National Conference joining
his organisation once they w ere denied party mandate. And if Mir succeeds in giving birth to his cherished dream of forming the third front he would expect those political activists who get sidelined to join the front.
Mir has nothing to invest. He and his JKDP have yet to carve out a strong base in the state as the organisation comprises a handful of people. As such hehas the scope for obliging new entrants by fielding them in various constituencies. This is the reason for
Mir to say"many people are shortly coming to my side."During the last couple of months there is intense race among mainstream political parties for winning activists of their rival organisations to their side In the process five mainstream parties, the National Conference, the PDP,the Congress, the BJP and the Panthers Party, have gained on
one front and lost on the other one.
Defections from one side to the other is the result of lack of commitment on the part of leaders and activists There used to be a time when one never expected men of the saffron brigade deserting their parent organisations. And in recent weeks groups of workers belonging to the BJP have joined either the NC or the Congress or the PDP in some parts of the Jammu region.During the time the National Conference was headed by Sheikh Abdullah defection could be a political sin and a few among those, who were not the
founder members, had deserted the party failed to find a base in the state. It was after his demise the congress could engineer defections through the Sheikh's son-in- law,G.M.Shah.
The State unit of the Congress has been registering defections at regular intervals. It suffered a major setback when Mufti Mohd.Sayeed quit the organization to join V.P.Singh.After the Mufti floated his PDP several senior Congress leaders, whom he had cultivated when he was the PCC Chief, joined him and some of them have remained members in the council of ministers during the last five and a half years.Political
observers here say that as soon as the schedule for the election was announced these five mainstream political parties will witness defections on a large scale because right now senior functionaries of the congress, the PDP,the National Conference and the BJP
are engaged in hooking people from the other side.
The reason:These mainstream organisations have been plagued by dissensions. And those feeling dismayed and disenchanted with the style of functioning of their leaders have become fence sitters. They keep on watching the internal developments in the
organisations they belong to.Once they feel they have been sidelined they would be welcomed by the rival organisations. No doubt these fence sitters could be given juicy promises which may not be fulfilled. Instances are galore.During the bypoll in Poonch
Assembly constituency one female doctor was motivated by the National Conference leadership to join the party with the promise she would get the mandate. But when the party selected the candidate she was dropped like a pebble. It can happen again because the Congress, the PDP and the National Conference besides the BJP have more than one candidate aspiring for the party mandate from various constituencies.Again only
the JKDP or the third front has the scope to accmmodate the defectors.Once the defections start the already fluid political situation may assume bigger diensions.
