| Kids begin preparing for encounters | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 19 Civilians often become terror targets and last week's encounter in Samba near Jammu proved that no one is safe after children were also taken as hostages by militants. Authorities and civil defence committees recognise this and are now training children on disaster management and teaching them the art of self-defence during armed encounters between militants and security forces. With little distinction in an encounter between combatant and civilian the villagers are learning how to stay out of the hands of the militants. Civil defence committees, local villagers with simple arms and elementary training are holding mock drills in schools around Jammu. ''I will try and take maximum advantage of this training and I will help myself and my friends,'' said Sachin, Samba resident. This exercise has been launched a week after major gun battle near Samba where militants took children as hostages and civilians were killed in that firefight. ''Militants had appeared at Samba recently, there were bomb blats, now we are making the children aware that if any incident happens you should help people before the paramedical and people reach there,'' said Shashi Kohli, Divisional Warden Civil Defence, Jammu. In view of the spurt in the incidents of violence in the state, tips on disaster management can really help the children to be more alert to save their lives and the lives of others. India has already made all preparations, including widening the road between Baramulla and Kaman Post, the last point on this side of LoC, and establishing other infrastructural facilities. |
