| Vegetable vendors, fruit sellers shut shops to protest price rise | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 19 People in Jammu had to go without fresh vegetables and fruit following strike resorted to by the wholesalers and retailers today. These fruit and vegetable dealers and vendors shut their establishments in protest against the rate list issued by the Government. The state Government had,in pursuance of guidelines from the centre asking the states to check inflation, had issued rate lists for various consumer items, including fruit and vegetables. The dealers said that the rates fixed by the Government were on a very low level forcing them to sell vegetables and fruit on loss no profit basis. Dealers from Narwal fruit and vegetable mandis took to the streets and shouted slogans against the Government. They drove in the load carriers, which carry fruit and vegetables from the fields to the mandi, and forced those rehriwallas and shops to shut down their establishments. Retailers said that they purchased water melon at Rs.eight a kg and had to be sold at less than Rs.10 when "we have to spend money on transportation."They said the Government had adopted UP pattern wherein bananas, oranges had to be sold in kgs.Hitherto these items would be sold to consumers in dozens. This had resulted in highly reduced selling prices. Both the retailers and the wholesellers suggested to the Government to fix a fresh rate list after discussion with the dealers and traders. However, majority of consumers interviewed appreciated the Government decision and wanted it to enforce strict implementation of the rate list. They also demanded that the Government should fix afresh retail prices of mutton chicken, cheese and eggs because their prices had skyrocketed and the dealers sold the items 10 to 20 poer cent higher than the rates fixed by the Government. |
