The news spread like wild fire in the frontier township of Uri, where panic stricken villagers took to streets and staged strong protest demonstration against the alleged negligence of Power Development Department (PDD). The incident occurred in a small hamlet Uri, where people suddenly got a high voltage supply to their homes through the transmission lines. "A High transmission wire connected with a nearby low transmission wire, which is used to supply the electricity to the consumers", a local villager told News Agency of Kashmir adding, "All the electric appliances were damaged and current even passed through some residential houses". Two persons, identified as thirty-eight year government employee Mohammed Hafiz Magul son of Mohmmed Sharie and a fifty year old driver Mohammed Karim Najar son, died on the spot when they received the electric shocks. Three more persons, including two girls, were injured. They have been identified as Sazia Bano, Fozia Bano and their brother Tahzib Ahmed Magul all children of Aziz Magul of Bandi Uri. Station House Officer (SHO) Uri Abdul Rashid Khan said that police has registered case in this matter and FIR bearing number 37/08 Under Section 304 A RPC has been lodged. "We are investigating the matter to fix the responsibility", he added. Meanwhile, people staged a protest demonstration in Uri against the negligence of PDD officials. Protesting people demanded strict action against the employees of PDD who according to them were responsible for the negligence and dereliction of duty leading to loss of life and property. Aftab Magul, whose two cousins were seriously injured, said, "All this happened due to the negligence of the PDD authorities as we had repeatedly approached them for proper placing of the electric wires in the village but nobody paid any attention". "Aren't PDD responsible for the whole tragedy," asked Magul with tears streaming out from his eyes. Another protestor said, "Everybody can see here that they have kept very little distances between the HT lines and LT lines which could lead such incidents in future also." |
