CM emphasizes on ensuring quick power projects, satellite cities

Srinagar, August 30 – Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad here last evening presided over a high level meeting of task force for economic and social development of Jammu and Kashmir where vital decisions were taken for ensuring economic and social growth of the state.
Chief Minister while addressing the meeting of the task force emphasized that in order to effectively translate Prime Minister’s reconstruction plan under power sector for the benefit of the people within shortest possible time appropriate measures are required to be taken to utilize Rs. 15000 crore earmarked for power sector under the package for generation of power through short gestation period of 3 to 4 years rather than prolonged projects.
Mr. Azad said that whether it is tourism, industry, handicrafts, health, agriculture, irrigation or any other sector, power is pre-requisite for smooth growth and development of these sectors. He said that he had on the eve of Srinagar roundtable conference in a high level meeting which was chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Sing to take stock of Prime Minister’s reconstruction programme pointed out about the same and the Prime Minister had instructed Union Power Ministry to work on short-term projects which will yield effective results to overcome the power shortage in the state.
The issue of transfer of Salal hydel project to the state and accelerating the work on Baglihar project were also discussed in the meeting.
The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Task Force Dr. C. Rangarajan, Economic Advisor to the State Government Dr. Haseeb A Drabu, Mr. Moosa Raza, Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Mr. T. N. Thakur, Mr. Analjit Singh, Mr. S. S. H. Rahman, Mr. Sunil Mittal, Dr. D. Subbarao, Mr. Ajit Kumar, Chief Secretary Mr. C. Phunsog, Chief Executive Economic Reconstruction Agency Mr. Vijay Bakaya, Financial Commissioner Home Mr. B. R. Kundal, Principal Secretary Agriculture Mr. S. S. Sahni, Principal Secretary Power Development Mr. Madhav Lal, Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce Mr. S. S. Kapoor, Director General of Police Mr. Gopal Sharma, Commissioner/Secretary Finance Mr. B. B. Vyas and Commissioner/Secretary Science and Technology Mr. L. D. Jha.
Mr. Azad also emphasized for strengthening Radio and TV transmissions in the state. He said that telecommunication system should be re-oriented so that it reaches each nook and corner of the state with all modern broad-band and other facilities.
Chief Minister also pointed out in the meeting that in order to take benefit of Bharat Nirman programme, state government is required to pay Rs. 600 crore to Rs. 700 crore as land compensation. He said that Jammu and Kashmir being the less revenue oriented state it is required to be compensated on this account as well as a special case so that vision of connecting each village, niabat and block with roads is realized.
Mr. Azad advised the task force members to immediately work for development of satellite cities covering the peripheries of two capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
Dr. Rangarajan and the members of the task force assured the Chief Minister that it will make full efforts to take all possible steps towards economic and social development of the state. They said that emphasis will also be laid for creating ideal infrastructure in tourism sector with a view to raise the GDP of the state to remarkable heights. They also pointed that in order to boost local handicrafts sector, the scheme for rural hubs in all villages and blocks will be introduced which will not only help in marketing of handicrafts products but also prove beneficial for thousands of artisans to get proper exposure about modern techniques.
They also informed that in order to boost primary health sector, measures would be taken and this would be brought in the 11th five year plan.
