| Rich tributes paid to Rajiv Gandhi | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 21
Several functions were held across Jammu and Kashmir to observe 17th death anniversary of the visionary leader and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who fell to the bullets of the assailants on this day 17 years ago. Describing Rajiv Gandhi a true leader of masses who sacrificed his life for the noble cause of nation, Minister for CAPD Taj Mohi-ud-Din said that late Gandhi throughout his life worked for peace and prosperity of the country. Paying rich tributes to late leader on his 17th death anniversary while addressing a largely public gathering at Pahloo Kulgam, Minister has underscored the need to follow the path shown by late Gandhi for strengthening the communal harmony between different communities, religions and castes of the country. Saying that Congress has always stood for unity and integrity of the country and coming to the rescue of the people of the state whenever conditions warranted, the Minister said that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been concern of central government in all areas of development, peace and betterment of the people. Reminding the people of Rajiv’s sympathetic approach towards people of the state, Minister said that late Gandhi whether in power or out of it always thought and worked for the interests of the state as whole and even visited Kashmir during 1990 despite the fatal situation. Minister of State for Education G. M. Saroori, Chairman Handicrafts Development Corporation Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, General Secretary JKPCC Abdul Majid Padroo also paid rich tributes to late leader on his death anniversary. Paying rich tributes to late Rajaiv Gandhi the Minister for Social Welfare Abdul Gani Vakil has said that nation is greatly indebted to Nehru family which has made supreme sacrifices to uphold unity, integrity and secular character of India. Addressing a huge youth rally at Baramulla today held to pay tributes to late Rajiv Gandhi, the Minister said that all scions of Nehru family proved epoch- founders who scripted new chapters in country’s progress by innovative policies, visionary outlook and economic stability in their respective political careers. He said while Rajiv’s big landmarks were universalization of adult franchise, development of science-technology and space-research sectors and establishment of Panchayat Raj, Mrs. Sonia set an historic example by declining to become Prime Minister following victory of UPA in 2004. She did so to practically prove to her detractors that national interest not power was dear to her and to Congress party. This, he said set a shinning example for all Congress leaders down the hierarchy. Vakil said that best way of paying tributes to Rajiv Gandhi was to work for peace and development in the state. He appealed Hurriyat to come to negotiating table for putting across their view point, if they sincerely want to end bloodshed in the state, adding without joining parleys their stance can’t be ascertained. He urged them to participate in ensuing electoral exercise to establish their democratic credentials. Vakil also paid homage to Moulana Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone. These leaders, he said fell to bullets for advocating dialogue and non-violent means to resolve Kashmir issue. among others, Minister of State for Agriculture Ch. Gharu Ram, MLA Khemlata Wakhloo, Vice President State PCC Mr. Bashir Ahmad Magray, MLC Mohammad Amin Bhat and Jan Mohammad Iqbal addressed the rally and paid rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi. On the eve of death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi an impressive function was held at PCC headquarters at Srinagar today. Minister for Rural Development Mula Ram presided over. Lauding the role of late P.M. in launching Panchayati Raj in the country, Mula Ram said Rajiv Gandhi was the architect of Panchayati Raj who believed in decentralization of power by making these institutions strong and independent. The Minister said state government is also committed to strengthen Panchayati Raj in the state by giving them powers to solve their problems at gross root levels. On the occasion Mula Ram and Higher Education Minister Gulchain Singh Charak laid floral rings on the portrait of the late Rajiv Gandhi. Various Other congress leaders also paid tributes to him on the occasion.
