Is Pak crackdown on Saeed a sincere? 7/5/2019 11:50:58 PM Under the pressure from the US Government Pakistani authorities announced a crackdown the other day against Hafiz Saeed, leader of the group blamed for deadly attacks on Mumbai in 2008, amid growing international pressure to act against militant groups. Pakistan's counter-terrorism department said it had launched 23 cases against Saeed and 12 aides for using five trusts to collect funds and donations for Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), blamed by India and the United States for the attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people. Two banned LeT-linked charities, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), were also targeted, the department said in a statement. "All the assets of these organizations and individuals will be frozen and taken over by the state," said a counter-terrorism senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly. The counter-terrorism department said the action was in accordance with UN sanctions against the individuals and entities. Is Pakistan an d to be specific its counter terrorism department are serious in taiming militants and that of their leaders, especially Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar. Even the counter terrorism Department has made it public that the action has been taken under the UN sanctions against some individuals responsible for export of terror to India, especially to Jammu and Kashmir. This indicates that the US has conveyed a recent threat to Pakistan to crack down on those who were collecting funds for the militant outfits and who were financing various militant outfits. The US and the UN should have not bothered about India but the recent attacks on the security personnel in Afghanistan seem to have motivated the US and the UN to impose sanctions against those who export terror to Afghanistan and India, especially to Jammu and Kashmir. Despite large killings of militants the vale of Kashmir is not exhausted of militancy. There are still over 250 militants in the valley and they create an added problems for the security forces.
