Timely refutation of NC claim, but Congress must clean its Augean Stable
5/21/2008 11:46:37 PM
A stitch in time saves nine. Following this dictum the Congress MLA from Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency of Jammu city under which falls Jammu Cantonment Board Area, Raman Bhalla, has acted timely by refuting the claim of National Conference that all the seven candidates elected to the Cantonment Board in the election held on Sunday, were supported by National Conference and thus undoing the impression created by the National Conference about is growing hold in Parts of Jammu city as well. Though little late, yet the assertion by Raman Bhalla through a press conference that the elections to the Cantonment Board were not fought on party lines and that all the candidates who have emerged victorious in the elections have no political leaning and that the National Conference has unnecessarily tried to politicize the same by staking false claim of the victorious candidates having been supported by the party is a right course to shelve any wrong impression sought to be created in this behalf. In fact the election to the local bodies at any level should always be fought on non party lines and the persons most suitable to tackle civic problems of the areas falling under the jurisdiction of a local body should be elected. The politicization of election to the civic bodies and later division among the members on the bases of their loyalties to their political parties who had fielded them and supported them to win, always harms the interest of the smooth functioning of the civic body and hampers the development works to be carried. Nevertheless, we cannot help observing that there is dire need for the Congress to clean its own house and create an impression of the party being united and not ridden by factionalism, which has been the general impression about it among the common people. The party leaders and functionaries of any organization working at cross purposes and trying to let down each other by washing their dirty linens in the public, while shakes the confidence of the workers and rank and file of the party in their leadership, while at the same time it goes to create aversion in the minds of the common man against the politicians as a whole as well as in the party based democracy. There is dire need for all the parties to present their united face before their supporters as well as the public at large. But this can be possible only when the party leaders and activists are motivated more by ideological commitment rather than using the party forum to serve their vested interest and further their personal political prospects. The want of commitment to the ideology of the party leads to frequent defections and horse trading among the politicians, which in the ultimate analysis shakes people's faith in the democratic process itself.
