Jammu | May 21
In a season of repeated breach of ceasefire on the borders disturbing the security scenario, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today called for political calm in the Congress as he put a fervent advisory to his party men for an internal truce to face future challenges.
When the top leadership of Congress today gathered to pay tributes to the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the partymen fully utilized the opportunity to a give a vent to the ire against their party colleagues. The main function was held here at the Jammu University auditorium.
Listening to the party colleagues with rapt attention along with state Congress president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, the Chief Minister gave a one-liner to all –“let there be a ceasefire in the party. Bury your differences and work unitedlly for success of Congress in forthcoming elections”.
Members of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma and Chowdhary Lal Singh were vocal among all in hitting the party colleagues, though without naming any. Conspicuous by his absence was the Speaker Legislative Assembly Tara Chand, against whom Madan Lal had leveled nasty allegations recently.
Azad underlined the importance of election year and reminded the party leaders of challenges ahead. Though he did not comment on the individual issues and problems in the party but asked all to sink their differences and work for victory of party in the forthcoming elections.
Later speaking to the media persons on sidelines of the function, the Chief Minister said, “my message to the party leaders is clear: time has come to work unitedly and strengthen hands of each other to face bigger challenges that lie ahead”. Standing by his side, the PCC Chief Soz hastened to add that the party men have been told to work in tandem with each other to improve electoral performance of the party during the forthcoming Assembly polls.
Earlier the beleaguered Member Parliament Madan Lal Sharma, in his speech, called for putting new faces in the forthcoming elections. In an obvious reference to the Speaker Tara Chand, the MP said, “if Congress is serious about winning the elections, the party will have to put up new faces as the people were looking for a change”.
Madan added, “the congress workers are not happy with few sitting legislators and are demanding change to improve living conditions in the surrounding areas”.
Apparently annoyed with his party collogues, another Member Parliament Chowdhary Lal Singh also fell heavily on those who criticize him for flouting his wife on the seat he vacated after being elected as MP. Daring his detractors to cite even a single instance where he and his wife have resorted to any unfair means, he said the moment any such case is proved against them they will not lose a single second to tender their resignation.
