| SOS boys win U-14, U-17 Hockey finals | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 22 The energetic young teams of SOS School clinched both under-14 and under-17 boys hockey titles thereby making it a clean sweep in the inter-school competitions of Jammu district organized by Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today. In the under-17 final, SOS School underwent a close contest against Government High School Simbal Camp boys, who fought till the last minute to salvage a win. Taking first lead, HS Simbal conceded two goals scored by Jaspreet Singh in the second half. Gagandeep Singh had scored the first goal of the match for HS Simbal Camp in the first half. Earlier, in under-14 group, SOS School defeated the same school by six goals to nil. Manpreet was top scorer with four goals while Pushpinder and Bhavneet contributed one goal each to make it a one-sided affair. Risking life Playing without shin pads, the young boys from SOS School and Government High School Simbal Camp were inviting injuries to lower parts of their legs. Adding to the woes of these poor students from Simbal Camp School, the J&K State Sports Council failed to water the Astroturf before the matches today thereby forcing the teenagers to play on dry turf. “The dry turf is dangerous for the players, especially the young ones because it hurts when it (turf) is dry. The watering before the match makes it a bit soft and playable,” said a senior hockey player on the condition of anonymity. Watching the game at the Stadium, the senior player added that playing without watering also damages the turf. |
