Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 15: Jammu and Kashmir police has paid rich tributes to a Selection Grade Constable, who was martyred in a militant attack on an National Conference (NC) leader in south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Sunday.
Meanwhile, political party leaders, including NC vice-president Omar Abdullah and CPI(M) senior leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami have condemned the killing of the policeman during a militant attack on a politician.
A police official on Monday said that all ranks of police personnel, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and civil administration officers, paid floral tribute to Selection Grade Constable Riyaz Ahmad at a wreath-laying ceremony at District Police Line (DPL) Anantnag late on Sunday night.
''Senior police officers, including Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Kashmir range, SSP Anantnag and other police officers laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyr for the supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty,'' he said.
He said the martyr is survived by parents, wife, 23-year-old son Arif Riyaz, 19-year-old son Sharik Khan and 17-year-old daughter Bazila Riyaz. ''We pay our rich tributes to the martyr for his supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty. We stand by his family at this crucial juncture,'' he added.
''My colleague from Kokernag in South Kashmir Judge (Retd) Tauqeer was just attacked by militants. While he escaped unhurt his security officer was hit and killed in the line of duty. I unreservedly condemn this dastardly attack & convey my condolences to the family of the deceased," National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
''The security officer Selection Grade Constable Riyaz Ahmed Khan was posted with him for the last few years and was killed when three militants attacked a party convention. I've just spoken to Tauqeer to convey my concern & my condolences for Riyaz's death,'' he added.
Officials said that militants on Sunday evening fired at NC leader Syed Tawqeer Shah while he was returning from Kokernag in Anantnag, where he had gone to attend a meeting of the party workers. Mr Shah escaped unhurt, however, his Personal Security Officer (PSO) was killed in the attack, the sources added.
