| ‘Healthcare at doorstep by 2010’ | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 23 Promising to change the profile of healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that the capacity in various hospitals in state will be hiked by another 8000 beds in next two years and a dependable healthcare system will be ensured in every block by 2010. Underlining the efforts made by his government to upgrade the health infrastructure in the State, Azad thanked the Prime Minister and the Government of India for coming forward in a big way to help the State upgrade health facilities in terms of infrastructure, machinery, equipment and manpower. Chief Minister was speaking at the convocation of the SKIMS Srinagar where President of India, Pratibha Patil was the Chief Guest. He said the Prime Minister sanctioned two projects for the upgradation of Government Medical Colleges at Srinagar and Jammu to the level of AIIMS. He said this was a special dispensation for J&K as for other states the central government had agreed to upgrade only one medical college. He said 15 super specialties were being developed at Jammu Medical College and an Institute of Traumatology with 9 related super specialties at Srinagar Medical College. He said the work on these projects had been taken up and would be completed in the next 18 months. Azad said that the State government proposed to cover all the 142 blocks with a dependable health facility by 2010. He said out of these, 61 health institution buildings had been completed last year while another 43 were slated for completion this year. He said during the next two years about 8000 beds would be added to the government hospitals whose present strength was 12,338. He said district hospitals, community health centres and primary health centres in the State were also being upgraded to the Indian Public Health Standards. The construction and procurement of equipment for these institutions had been put on fast track, he said adding, 200-bed district hospitals in all the 22 districts, 50-bed sub-district hospitals at tehsil headquarters and 30-bed community health centres at block headquarters were being established in the State. The Chief Minister said that the university activities at SKIMS had been given a new dimension by creating several new courses at post-doctoral, post-graduate, graduate and under-graduate level for doctors and paramedics. He said although the SKIMS had taken significant steps in the direction in which the country was steadily and progressively advancing, there was no room for sitting on the laurels. He said as the rest of the country was gearing up to meet the multiple challenges of health care transition, the SKIMS also had to use its resources in patient care, teaching and research to open pathways for better health and speedier development. He said since the people had lot of expectations with SKIMS, it would continue to make efforts to provide latest facilities of diagnosis and therapeutics. He said the aim of the institute was not only to provide patient care of the highest order to the people but also provide leadership in extending the healthcare facilities to the doorsteps of the community by establishing a sound referral system. |
