| Vegs, salads go off menu | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 23 Soaring prices and a sustained strike by vendors have almost take vegetable and salads off the menu of Jammuites even as authorities continue to sleep over things. Jammuites have a peculiar eating habit which involves mostly pulses and vegetables, they are also found of salads. However, vegetables are either not available at the ends or they bring home the stale leaves with no fresh arrivals. Not to speak of the households, even the hotels and restaurants are taking the vegetables off the menu as fresh stocks are not available in the market due to a strike of vegetable traders since last five days. The increasing pilgrim traffic to Mata Vaishno devi shrine is adding extra burden even as hoteliers are struggling to procure fresh stock of vegetables from the farmers, already facing the heat. Now the Jammuites are worried as even wholesale vegetable and fruit seller associations have decided to support their strike from Saturday. Efforts made by the state government to diffuse the crisis emerging out of five day long strike have failed to cut ice with the representatives of the fruit and vegetable retailers association. Several rounds of meetings remained inconclusive as the state government was not showing any flexibility, leaders of the association alleged charging state government of not doing enough to address the real issue of price hike. Ramesh Gupta, a fruit vendor said the state government has issued rate list of vegetables and different fruits but their eyes are shut as they failed to take note of the market rates. We can minimize our profit margin for some time but we are in no way ready to earn mere losses .We will not agree to the rate list prepared by the state government, Dharam Pal said. |
