| Sikhs denied minority status in J&K: Wazir | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 25 Various Sikh organizations have expressed their anguish and dissatisfaction over the discrimination with Jammuites in general and Sikh community in particular. Addressing a joint press conference here today, Jagjit Singh Wazir, intellectual and advisor of the Sikh organizations, said that the Sikhs are being treated as 3rd category citizens and indiscrimination is openly met with them, in appointments, promotions and academic selections. In spite of fact that Sikhs have been notified as minority community amongst other four communities, during 1992 as per report of National Commission of Minorities Act, the J&K Government has not acted to grant minority status to Sikhs till date, he said. He further said that the Sikhs of Jammu and Kashmir are discriminated in all sectors like Educational Institutions, technical education, Public Service Commission, Service Selection Board . Citing an example of discrimination with community, Wazir said that selection lists of PSC and SSRB which were published on May 16 clearly establishes the extent of favouritism, corruption and bungling in selections. He said out of 174 vacancies of Civil Engineers no Sikh candidate has been selected from open category. He demanded a high level enquiry through independent Judge from High Court, to probe into the selections made by PSC and SSRB early during the year. He also highlighted various examples of alleged discrimination with the community. Among others who attended the press conference Gajan Singh, Kulwant Singh, Kultar Singh, Dharminder Singh, Jagjit Singh, Rajinder Singh and others from Shiromani Youth Akah Dal, Bhai Kanahiya Nishkam Sewa Society, AISSF, Sikh Nojawan Sabha. |
