| J&K govt keen on restoring political sanctity: Vakil | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 25 Social Welfare Minister Abdul Gani Vakil today said the coalition government was keenly working for restoring sanctity of politics and strengthening democratic institutions that has suffered adversely during turmoil in the state. "The purpose of this exercise is to ensure a vibrant democratic set-up where people feel themselves completely sovereign," Vakil, who is also vice-president of JKPCC said, addressing a public gathering at Behram Pora-Rafiabad in Baramulla district. Vakil said the Centre has put an effective Anti-defection Law, which has frustrated political "chameleons", who were habituated in switching loyalties "to amass property" at the cost of the state exchequer. The law was necessary to stall march of politicians with short-term goals in a new era of clean politics, he said. He also heaped praises on UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and appreciated her efforts to aid the state in its march to development. "The UPA chairperson has been ensuring massive funds for every welfare- and development-oriented proposal for the trouble-torn state on priority basis as she has special consideration for the people of J&K," Vakil said, adding that her efforts aimed at alleviating pain of the people. On Indo-Pak relations, Vakil said a stable and democratic Pakistan is in the interest the sub-continent, particularly for J&K, as "any untoward development in the neighbouring country has a spill-over impact on us". The minister added that India favours friendly ties with Pakistan and referred to the recent meeting between foreign ministers of the two countries, wherein they committed to carry forward composite dialogues to resolve all outstanding issues. |
