Dawood Ibrahim faces new threat
Interpol in motion to prevent his 'disappearance'
8/30/2006 9:24:47 PM

NEW DELHI, AUG. 30: Islamabad's repeated denials notwithstanding, Pakistan continues to look after Dawood Ibrahim, the infamous underworld don. The government of India, according to official information, has obtained fresh evidence in this regard. It is official: New Delhi has not abandoned its efforts to get back Dawood Ibrahim, from his protectors across the country's borders. A new hope has been generated by the Interpol, with the decision to re-issue its seventh notice.
The decision follows two important developments. In the first place India's premier investigating agency, the CBI, held fresh round of negotiations with Interpol on the 'safe' handing over to this side of the border of Dawood, listed in Indian official records as one among the 'most wanted' criminals. Second development flowed from the move by the United Nations to make Interpol act against the don, who has already been put on the UN's Al Qaeda/Taliban committee list.
Significance is attached to Interpol's move-that is, to re-issue the seventh notice. If the Red Corner Notice is for the arrest of a wanted person, the Blue Notice is to seek details about a person's identity. While the Green Notice is for issuing a warning, the Black Notice is meant to establish identity of an unidentified body. And if the Yellow Notice relates to a missing person, the Orange Notice is specifically meant for sounding a security alert.
It was soon after the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts that Interpol issued the Red Corner Notice against Dawood Ibrahim. Interpol's seventh notice, it is learnt, will make member countries of Interpol to impose ban on the movement of the underworld don across 184 countries including Pakistan. Dawood is said to be hiding himself in a 'safe house' in Pakistan, strong denials by Islamabad notwithstanding.
Interpol will want the police in member-countries to proceed against the 'most wanted' persons, including Dawood. According to Interpol, those individuals who have already become the target of UN anti-terrorism sanctions, need to face measures such as freezing of assets, travel ban and arms embargo.
Dawood Ibrahim's name is in the updated list of UN. Appearing as entry number 109, Dawood has also his Indian passport details included in the list, which was updated in September last year. His passport number, as recorded in the UN list, is A-333602. The passport was issued on April 6, 1985, in Mumbai.
In its 'special notice' issued recently, the Interpol has apprised the UN member nations about the details of Dawood Ibrahim's 11 passports and 16 aliases. And Interpol recognizes Dawood as part of the worldwide terror syndicate of Osama bin Laden. Dawood Ibrahim's operations, according to inputs made available by the Interpol, have spanned Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
