| J-K emerging as knowledge hub: CM | | | Early Times Reporter Bhadarwah | May 25 Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that with setting up of university campuses, technical and professional institutions and expansion of school and college education across the state, Jammu and Kashmir was fast emerging as knowledge hub in the country. Azad was addressing the invited guests and public gathered at the scheduled inauguration of the Bhaderwah campus of Jammu University, which was, however, cancelled owing to President Pratibha Patil’s failure to arrive. The Chief Minister called upon student community to benefit from the state of the art facilities at higher, technical and professional educational institutions provided by the government at their doorsteps. He said that road connectivity; education, healthcare and basic amenities for people in all areas of the state had been his top agenda, adding that much headway was made in these sectors during the last two and a half years. He said these sectors were pivotal for speedier progress and, accordingly, received focused attention of his government. Referring to education scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said that thousands of new schools had been opened and upgraded and 40 new degree colleges set up during the last 4 years, besides establishing additional university campuses at Baramulla, Anantnag, Bhadarwah, Udhampur, Kathua and Poonch. He also announced that additional campuses of Kashmir University would also be set up at Kupwara and in Ladakh. He said this would further enhance the reach of higher and professional education in the state. Azad added that within next four years all villages in Jammu and Kashmir would be connected by roads and provided best possible healthcare, power and drinking water facilities. He said Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts had the minimum road connectivity keeping these areas underdeveloped over the years. He said several road projects had been taken in hand now. He said that Gandoh-Jai road was being constructed at a cost of Rs 33 crore with the central assistance. He said, similarly, Kahara-Jai road too would be constructed with a cost of Rs 25 crore. He said the Centre had also sanctioned Rs 80 crore for construction of Bhadarwah-Chamba road, adding that it would give boost to tourism and local economy and also generate employment. He said the up gradation work on Doda-Bhadarwah road was being completed soon while Kishtwar-Chhatroo, Kokernag and Batote-Kishtwar roads would also be upgraded and made double lane to open up Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar districts for faster pace of progress. Referring to tourism sector, Azad said that a number of measures were underway to give fillip to tourism which was the mainstay of state's economy. He said in order to create, upgrade and expand tourist infrastructure, tourism development authorities had been set up and tourist circuits were being developed in various parts of the state. He said that tourism development authorities of Bhadarwah, Doda, Kisthwar and Patnitop were currently engaged in creating modern tourist infrastructure in the respective areas. He said Lakhanpur-Basohli-Bani-Bhadarwah-Doda-Kishtwar-Chhatroo-Kokernag tourist circuit was being developed with the required wayside facilities. To give further boost to tourism sector, international airport at Srinagar would be commissioned shortly and the airport at Jammu upgraded, he added. The Chief Minister also said that 50 percent seats in Bhadarwah university campus in all courses would be reserved for students who pass their graduation from the degree colleges located in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, speaking on the occasion, gave details about the courses available in Bhadarwah University campus and those in the pipeline as well as facilities made available for providing quality education. Among those present on the occasion, were Minister for Higher Education Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister of State for School Education, G. M. Saroori, MP, Ch. Lal Singh, legislators Mohammad Sharief Niaz, Farida Mir and Abdul Majid Wani, Chief Secretary, B. R. Kundal, Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda, senior officers, faculty members, prominent citizens, students and people of the area. |
