28-year old agitation for district status has borne fruit in Shopian
7/7/2006 6:56:52 PM
Srinagar,July 7 :- After over 35 years the struggle of people of Shopian bore fruit when the Government conceded their demand of creating a new district with Shopian as the headquarters.
In fact the soul of Swaroop Nath,a 75 year old Kashmiri Pandit, who led a prolonged agitation in support of creation of a new district with Shopian as its headquarters,in late seventies. The tall Swaroop Nath had braved police lathis. He had gone to the Jail but did not succumb to the Government pressure while leading the agitation.Muslims in the area had entrusted Swaroop Nath the task of leading the agitation which last for several months.
And unfortunately Swaroop Nath is no longer alive to celebrate his victory. But his soul may have rested in peace with the Government decision to have Shopian as the headquarters of the new district.
People of Shopian had been enraged by the way the then Government headed by Sheikh Abdullah had, while carrying out reorganization of districts, favoured Pulwama as the headquarters of a new district.Since Shopian has remained a hub of political activities since 1931 and prominent political leaders, educationists, journalists, lawyers have come from Shopian people had expected district status.
The case with Kishtwar has not be dissimilar. In this subdivision also people had been agitating for the district status for the last over 30 years.Initially some political leaders had criticized Mr Azad for having added two more districts in Doda belt but later they realized that being the largest district and highly backward Doda district required to be split in three districts for ensuring better facilities for people and development in the area.
