| Ahluwalia inaugurates conference hall at SKUAST | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 27 Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia inaugurated newly designed Conference Hall at Faculty of Agriculture, Chatha today. The conference hall has been constructed within 15 months time at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 crore and is spread over an area of 1110 sq. m. The conference hall has a sitting capacity for 250 persons and is part of university auditorium complex, which would be built in a phased manner. The conference hall has a meeting room, office rooms and refreshment centre. Vice Chancellor, SKAUST-J, Prof. Nagendra Sharma was also present. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ahluwalia said “States who look after their agriculture meaningfully will enjoy eminence and influence among other nations”. Showed concern over declining share of agriculture in GDP he said it is a major concern for more than 50 percent of population and government is doing its best to work out strategies that would benefit agriculture. In the last three years, this government has increased the growth rate of agriculture sector, although we had imported but we are self sufficient is food grains and are working on the areas where there is less production/ growth. He added now we have to work on extension workers so as to make farmers aware of what is the best and latest technology available in the field so as to increase the production. He lauded the contribution and concerted efforts of Vice Chancellor of this University Dr. Nagendra Sharma. He expressed his complete satisfaction in the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor which had taken a touch task for establishing SKUAST Jammu which in future will serve the farmers of this state with new interventions in the agriculture. Prof. Nagendra Sharma said this university is doing its best for the farmers of the region. He said in order to promote the knowledge of agriculture, livestock sector, enhancement of farm income and productivity on sustainability basis, state of art facilities developed at this campus will be helpful to enrich farmers life and livelihood. It will provide alternative means of sustenance generating employment and improve the socio-economic status of the farming community. He said that Jammu division is bestowed with varied agro-climatic zones which provide ample opportunity for the scientists to come up with area specific recommendations for the socio-economic upliftment of farmers as agriculture is the predominant sector of this state and supports about 80 percent of its population. He informed that with the starting of learning programmes for farmers, they are directly connected through information e-kiosks at block level with e-studio based at Chatha campus of this university so as to solve their problems online and get the latest information. Before inauguration, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia visited the museum, different blocks of faculty building, lecture theatres, library and e-studio. The function was attended by members of Board of Management of SKUAST- Jammu, students, scientists, staff of university and farmers. |
