| Occupants of Nazool land observe token hunger strike | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 27 The office bearers and executive members of Forum of Lease Holders, Occupants of Nazool Govt Lands (FONL) affected by the ‘irrational’ implementation of Roshni scheme, today started a token hunger strike, to highlight their grievances and injustice being meted out to them and to lodge protest against the alleged apathetic attitude of the government to redress their grievances, here today. Speaking on the occasion S S Pathania president of the forum said that a large number of poor lease holders of lands, on which they have constructed their residential buildings and even commercial establishments for the last 60 to 80 years are leading from hand to mouth life and cannot afford paying huge amount as the cost fixed by the revenue authorities, under the provision of the Roshni Act. He further observed that as per the advertisements floated by the JDA, 15 more unauthorized colonies, where people have raised buildings on encroached lands are being regularized with the occupants asked to pay at the rate of Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1 lakh per kanal. This is an addition to 13 unauthorized colonies already regularized by the government in 2005, where the illegal occupants have been conferred ownership rights by paying the cost at the rate of Rs. 15000 to Rs.40000 per kanal. But against this lawfully allottes of lands through lease deeds entered into 50 to 60 years ago and where they have raised buildings several decades ago are being now served notices for paying exorbitant rates, ranging from Rs.40 lakh to Rs.1.5 crore per kanal. This is gross injustice and discrimination against them, which they will fight tooth and nail. The FONL leaders demanded that the genuine and authorized lease holders having lands upto 5 marlas under residential use and two marlas under commercial use with them should be given the ownership rights without charging anything, while those having lands more than that should be charged the rates at which the land under possession of unauthorized occupants through encroachments are being refularized. Alternatively they should be charged the rate which has been fixed by the Supreme Court in case of Amrit Malhotra, from whom the court has ruled the rate should be charged at Rs.52,000 per kanal, on the prime land. Among others who addressed the hunger strikers included Iqbal Khullar, Somnath Sharma, ML Sharma and Ajay Bakshi. |
