Release of Masood by NDA government a ‘Himalayan blunder’: Sadhotra
8/30/2006 10:39:45 PM
JAMMU AUG-30- Describing Masood Azhar’s release by the then NDA Government led by A B Vajpayee as a ‘ Himalayan blunder’, for which the entire world is still paying the price, senior National Conference (NC) leader and Provincial President Ajay Sadhotra said that BJP owes an apology to the nation and castigated the local BJP leadership for defending the indefensible.
Addressing media persons here today Sadhotra said that despite Dr Farooq Abdullah’s stiff resistance and opposition to the release of Masood Azhar, he said that he (Farooq) was warned of dire consequences if he failed to accept the demand for release of Azhar and maintained that Dr Abdullah had conveyed his anger to the PM and Advani and even urged the Governor to intervene and not to allow this wrong to be done but unfortunately the Central leadership was adamant to compromise with terrorism.
Advising local BJP leadership to desist from vilification campaign and instead advice its national leadership to apologize to the nation and the world for having released Masood and two other dreaded terrorists thereby abetting terrorism, Sadhotra said that BJP was in fact also a partner to the decision of the V P Singh government to succumb to militant pressure to seek release of Dr Rubbiya Sayed. He said this decision proved to be the turning point in the history of Kashmir’s terrorism adding that this decision too was taken by the Central Government despite Dr Abdullah’s stiff resistance.
Referring to the allegation of rehabilitation of militants by Farooq government, the NC leader said that this was done as a part of the National policy emerging out of national consensus, purported and supported by the Union government, in a bid to bring those misguided youth into the national mainstream who either had shunned the gun or agreed to do so.
Maintaining that National Conference is not averse to a dialogue or any effort to bring all those to the mainstream who shun the path of violence and use peaceful democratic means to explore possibility of resolution of Kashmir issue, Sadhotra said, adding that NC has always stood for principled politics based on strong political ideology and ethics and has never compromised on the same.
