Official sources said that the police and intelligence agencies had done indepth ground work for keeping the areas which the President visited during her stay in Kashmir and Jammu. The state Government has praised the police and paramilitary forces for preventing militants from carrying out armed strikes with the purpose of hitting the newspaper headlines.A week prior to the visit of Pratibha Patil security forces had carried out checking of pedestrians and passengers traveling by public transport or in their private vehicles at several nakhas set up in Srinagar and Jammu. A senior police officer today said that if any inconvenience was caused to people it was understandable because the rise of militancy had warranted intense patrolling and regulating the movement of traffic. He said that the police had to mobilize all its man power for guarding areas and routes from where the President's motorcade had to pass. He said that since the intelligence inputs had indicated that militants may attempt at kicking up violence "we had to be extra cautious"which bore the fruit as not a single ugly incident took place in any part of the state during the five-day visit of the President. The officer claimed that the incident free visit of Ms Pratibha Patil was not only the outcome of better management of the security grid but on account of marked drop in the level of violence in the state during the last over one year. |
