| Centre to liberally fund state police modernization plan | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 28 The Government of India had released Rs.115 crores for the modernization of police which included upgrading the weaponry, forensic science laboratories and the communication system. According to the Director General police, Kuldeep Khoda, the centre has released Rs.92 crores during the current year so far and "I hope that the financial aid may be further raised to enable us to modernise the police force by equipping it with sophisticated weapons and gadgets needed to upgrade the communication system." He today said "the modernisation of police was going to be a continuous process and the programme can be completed only with the help of central financial assistance."In reply to a question Mr Khoda said "latest reports revealed that infiltration bids by militants from across the border continued but most of these bids were being foiled by the troops guarding the LOC and by the police which has established a large number of border posts in villages which used to be the hiding places for the infiltrators." Asked whether the police will go in for fresh recruitment drive the Police Chief said "for the time being recruitment has been stopped except the process was still on for raising the 15th IRP battalion in the state." In reply to another question he said recruitment has been suspended following complaints on direct recruitment carried out by senior Government functionaries. He said the matter was being probed by the House committee of the state legislature and after the commttee's report was submitted to the Government decision on fresh recruitment would be taken after that.He stated at present "we had adequate man power as far as Armed police force was concerned." He said "we will need at least 25 additional companies of paramilitary forces for strengthening the security grid during the ensuing Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir and during the two-month long annual Amarnath pilgrimage starting from June 18." |
