| PDP’s policy has generated hopes among masses: Mehbooba | | PDP chief hails Farooq for seeing AFSPA revocation | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 29 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Ms Mehbooba Mufti has said the resolution of the problems confronting the people of Jammu & Kashmir lies in the PDP's pro-people political and economic agenda that has wide acceptance, both within and outside the State. Addressing a public meeting at Budgam today Mehbooba said the PDP's policy of political reconciliation and economic emancipation has generated a new hope for the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue and given the public support it has garnered, the time is not far away when Jammu & Kashmir would emerge as an epicenter of political stability and economic prosperity in the region. She said whether in or out of power, her party believes in the strength of democracy and resolving issues through dialogue. "Without any confrontation the PDP, while being a part of the Coalition Government, had brought to the center-stage the apparently delicate issues of troop reduction, scrapping of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and cross-LoC political and economic initiatives," she said and added that these issues now constitute the basis of discourse on Kashmir and progress on these can lead to ultimate resolution of the problem. Welcoming National Conference (NC) Patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah's statement supporting the people's demand for revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Ms Mufti said the compulsions of the situation in the latest observations of the NC Patron on the issue can clearly be seen. She said it is a known fact that the NC leadership has never been supportive of the popular demands of troop reduction and AFSPA revocation with conviction. "The latest statement of Dr Abdullah on the issue seems to be the party's political necessity after having initially opposed the demand tooth and nail and even ridiculing the PDP for raising its voice on such issues," she said and added that ironically it was the NC Government led by Dr Abdullah that imposed the infamous POTA in the State even before being operationalized in any part of the country. Ridiculing the NC's latest demand of compensation for the State's water resources, Mehbooba said the NC leaders must tell the people what forced them to trade the State's water resources in a reckless manner in 2000. "After having traded their autonomy resolution for power, the NC leaders, ironically, didn't even spare the State's water resources," she said and added that to the detriment of the State's economic interests, Dr Abdullah, as the Chief Minister, surrendered Jammu & Kashmir's water resources to the Center in lieu of a meager 12 percent electricity as royalty. |
