| J-K first northern state to successfully rear EMU | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 29 Jammu and Kashmir has become first north Indian State to have successfully reared EMU at its Poultry Project Belicharana Jammu. EMU a bird whose adult weight goes upto 60 kgs and attain a height of 5 ½ to 6 feet. The eggs laid by the EMU weigh upto 800 grams. The meat and eggs of EMU will fetch a handsome return to the farmers once it is introduced in the field. This was disclosed by Director Animal Husbandry Jammu, Dr. S.P Sharma while addressing a series of awareness camps at Village Rajpura (Gaghwal), Samba district and village Trewa (Arnia), Jammu organized by Publicity Wing Jammu and Rinderpest Control organization respectively under NPRE scheme. Dr. Sharma dwelt at length about the different schemes offered by the department aimed at raising the socio-economic status of farmers at micro level. The farmers were also made aware about scientific breeding and management practices to be adopted for extracting maximum benefits out of the livestock industry. The villagers hailed the department for organizing such awareness camps. |
