Tamil Nadu today topped in cluster-I to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals round in the 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy underway at different venues here today.
Tamil Nadu secured seven points out of two wins and one draw in cluster-I to pave way for the knock-out stages. Earlier, in today’s third and last league tie, Tamil Nadu could not secure a win after the match against Bihar ended in a 2-2 draw.
Bihar took the first lead netting the ball in the very third minute of the match through Nirajan Kumar Patel. However, luck favoured Tamil Nadu when a penalty was awarded for handball inside the goal area. Rajesh R successfully converted the penalty into goal to bring in an equalizer.
After the breather, Tamil Nadu went a head scoring the second goal in the 46th minute through T C Riju but only to face an equalizer in the 62nd minute. Mohd Shahanz scored the second goal for Bihar.
Earlier, in the first match of the day played at MA Stadium in the morning session, Sikkim defeated Chandigarh by three goals to one to keep their hopes alive for the pre-quarterfinals round.
Though Chandigarh took the first lead, yet Sikkim clinched a victory showing their exceptional skills and stamina after the breather. In fact, it was Bikash Jairu who scripted Sikkim’s victory with his double goal.
Bikash Jairu, who equalized Chandigarh’s first goal scored by Gopal Thapa (13th minute), netted the ball for his second and team’s third goal seconds before the final whistle. Second goal for Sikkim was scored by Empohang Subba in the 84th minute.
Chandigarh played a good game in the first half but Sikkim came out with some good moves and ball possession in the second half. Had the boys not missed the chances came their way, the winning margin would have been on higher side for Sikkim.
Commissioner, Jammu Minicipal Corporation, Jeet Lal Gupta was special guest in the morning match at MA Stadium. He was presented a sovenior by media manager (Jammu), Surinder Singh Bunty and Varinder Gupta on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA). Impressed by the way Santogh Trophy is being organized in a professional manner, Mr Gupta donated Rs 5000 to the kity of JKFA for promotion of the game in the state.
