Petty criminals on prowl at JU Campus
5/30/2008 11:38:19 PM

Jammu | May 30
Campus politics in Jammu University is allegedly taking a new turn with intervention of outsiders in routine matters. A group of students from JU have expressed their anguish over the assuming scenario as feel that security, dignity and honour of the scholars and students is being threatened by the outside elements with
criminal antecedents. The authorities at the helm of affairs though have taken measures from time to time but the outside elements are on prowl inflicting humiliation to the scholars and students at their will and not even sparing the faculty.
Now a days, Department of Mathematics of the university is at the centre stage, as the interests of different groups are converging here. Reportedly, many scholars of the department were separately threatened by a group of persons,(some of them even carrying weapons) inside their department.
As per reliable sources, all these scholars were protesting against the alleged malafide intention of their Head of Department (HoD) to select an inompetent candidate as Lecturer in the department, bypassing the merit. The scholars had realized the strategy of the HoD and they highlighted the issue at all the concerned levels without realizing that their rightful protest would invite the wrath of some unwanted elements.
However, on the protest of scholars the interview for the post was postponed indefinitely.
Sources further disclosed that the said group of persons was also seen having a close door meeting with the HoD on number of occasions during the last fortnight. It has not been confirmed as to why they were sitting with the HoD but, is being widely believed that either he was instigating the goons to pull up the protesting scholars or he was
also being pressurized by them.
Meanwhile, when contacted HoD Prof B S Komal, told EARLY TIMES at all threatened either by the scholars or by any outsider. But, the scholars insisted that their HoD was hell bent to clear the decks for that candidate and all these goons (alleged) were helping him for the said cause.
It is to mention that these scholars had even submitted a written complaint in this regard to Vice Chancellor and clearly stated the names of all those who threatened them. Although the Vice Chancellor ordered a formal enquiry into the matter but no concrete result has emerged as off now. This has created a sense of strong resentment
among the scholars and students of the department.
Sources further disclosed that some of the administrative officials are sheltering these elements, as JU has not registered any complaint in this regard with police or had initiated some action its own part. The students have alleged that it was a shear compromise with their dignity and the freedom of expression was being compromised by some vested interests in the campus.
Meanwhile, the interview issue of Mathematics Department was later taken up by some student organizations. The students' rivalry further aggravated the issue when some student organizations instead of focusing on issues related to their own student community tried to highlight the plight of HoD Mathematics and openly said that the HoD was threatened by his scholars, to which he denied out rightly. They even demanded the immediate conduct of the said interview. Previously also, it has been witnessed in the past that how such issues resulted in the shape of troubles in the campus but, still the
university administration has not taken a serious note of it and once again committing the same mistake by ignoring the facts and figures. Its high time the university administration should take immediate steps to cleans the campus off the outsiders and ensure a freedom of thought and expression in a democratic way.
