| All eyes at Raj Bhawan | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 30 For almost a week the newspapers are replete with the speculations over next resident at the Raj Bhawan and the political circles are keenly awaiting the announcement from New Delhi but interestingly the incumbent Governor Gen SK Sinha is still keeping his engagement calendar intact. Lt Gen SK Sinha's eventful term as Jammu and Kashmir Governor completes on June 4 –just five days from today but there is no official word on either his continuation or about the successor at the Srinagar Raj Bhawan. The keep watchers of state of affairs told EARLY TIMES that had there been a move to replace Gen Sinha immediately on the completion of his term, the Raj Bhawan would have been sounded in advance. However, the sources at the Raj Bhawan said that Gen Sinha is keeping his engagement calendar intact. This means that he has not got any official word from New Delhi on demitting the office. "Though normally the term of the Governor is five years but there is no such urgency to demit the office on last day of the term…he can be recalled earlier or allowed to stay a little longer as per the pleasure of the President of India", said a constitutional expert. With Gen Sinha's term coming to end there are around half a dozen names taking the rounds. Former Home Secretary VK Duggal, former Cabinet Secretary NN Vohra and former Army Chief Gen S Padmanabhan are reported to be among the front runners. However, it is learnt that Duggal may emerge as dark horse even though no one has been able to confirm the timing of appointment of the next Governor. Well informed sources suggested that the Central Government may defer the decision of appointing a new Governor at present though it may have cleared the name of Gen Sinha's successor. Such a decision is likely in view of the ensuing Amarnath Yatra which is managed by the Sri Amarnath Shrine Board headed by the Governor. |
