| After five years of neutrality MLA Dar joins PDP | | | Early Times Reporter

Making the much needed inroad into the National Conference bastion of Srinagar City, the Peoples Democratic Party today got a shot in the arm when an independent legislator and his supporters joined the party.
Shahjaan Dar, a rebel of National Conference, contested and won the 2002 assembly election as an independent candidate from Shia dominated Zadibad constituency in Srinagar City against Sadiq Ali –the official candidate of the National Conference. However, Dar, also a Shia leader, maintained an equal distance from all parties during past five and half years and maintained a low profile.
Interestingly, the National Conference candidate Sadiq Ali who lost to Shahjan Dar in 2002, a couple of months later joined the Peoples Democratic Party. He remained with PDP for nearly five years and then in a dramatic way returned to the National Conference earlier this year. Sadiq Ali is also Shia leader.
EARLY TIMES has learnt that both Sadiq Ali and Shahjan Dar are in one or the other way influenced or effected by another Shia leader Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari. Sadiq had left the National Conference as he was reportedly uncomfortable with huge clout of Ansari in the party.
However, a couple of years after his joining the PDP, Ansari too followed suit. Watching situation for a few months, Sadiq Ali had to return to the NC as he was not happy in company of Ansari in PDP.
Sadiq Ali holds Ansari responsible for his defeat in the 2002 assembly elections. It is believed that Ali had promising prospects in Zadibal constituency but Ansari managed to field Dar against him. Ansari is reported to have worked tacitly and clandestinely for Dar thus ensuring defeat of Sadiq Ali.
After his victory in 2002 elections, Shahjan Dar maintained a rare and equal distance from both PDP and Congress. Even though during the days of government formation in October 2002 he was hotly wooed and chased by both parties but he did not slip into their hands.
Now when Dar has joined the PDP, his decision is apparently influenced by Ansari who is these days senior vice president of the PDP. Shahjan today joined PDP in presence of party president Mehbooba Mufti.
On joining the party, Shahjehan Dar observed that pro people policies of PDP and the work done by the coalition government under the able leader ship of PDP Patron Mufti Mohammed Sayed motivated him to join the party fold. He added that he will contribute himself for the collective good of people of the state and will work to strengthen the party.
" PDP amongst all political parties existing in the Jammu& Kashmir has the commitment and security to mitigate the sufferings of common masses. This motivated me to join and strengthen the hands of PDP leader ship" Dar remarked.
Moulana Ansari and Peerzad Mansoor Hussain welcomed Dar and assured him of every kind of support to work for his people. |
