| DDC pulls industrialists on pollution | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 31 In order to review the action initiated by various government/semi government agencies to implement pollution control measures by various industrial units in the district particularly in industrial estates Kathua, District Development Commissioner Kathua, Sarita Chauhan convened a meeting here at Kathua. Chief Planning Officer Kathua Mr Sant Ram, President Municipal Council Kathua, Representatives from district industries centre Kathua and SICOP, District Pollution Officer and non official members were present in the meeting. The DDC came heavily on the industrialists and said that registration of industries who fail to install Pollution Control Devices (PCD) will be cancelled. A team of officers of PCB was asked to conduct surprise raids to check the installation of PCDs. Ms Chauhan said that Pollution Control Board has completed the inspections of various units located in Industrial Estate Kathua and the report was submitted to the Chairman SPCB for action as per the recommendations made in the report. The report was discussed in length in which it was apprised that the maximum units have taken steps to control the pollution. But in case of cement units which have land constraints no progress has been made. Water Pollution was also discussed in length and it was also revealed that only two to three units have installed the effluent treatment plants and rest have not installed complete ETPs. The DDC directed District Officer PCB Kathau to regularly monitor those units which have not installed ETPS and submit the report regularly. Earlier, the SICOP authorities informed the meeting that in response to expression of interest issued earlier for the engagement of consultant to provide the consultancy for construction of ETPs in the industrial estate, the SICOP has received response from two consultancies one from Ludhaina and other from Delhi, the final consultant will be finalized within 10 days for providing consultancy to setup ETP. The non official members also raised some issues relating of water pollution and solid waste by the industrial units. |
