| Services draw with Manipur, enter pre-quarters | | 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 31 The better goal average in the first two league matches today helped Services made it into the pre-quarterfinals from cluster-II after the tie against Manipur ended in a 2-2 draw in the ongoing 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at GGM Science College ground, here. Now, for quarterfinal berth, Services will be playing against Tamil Nadu tomorrow at 4.30 pm at GGM Science College ground, here. The well contested game was enjoyed by the spectators, including those from Indian Army, especially in the last 20 minutes after Services equalized the score on board 2-2. In a must win situation, Sikkim could not give it a good start and conceded the first goal in the 25th minute scored by S Releng of Services. However, luck came their way and a penalty was awarded to Sikkim in the 41st minute which they successfully converted into a goal by M Bijen Singh to level the score 1-1. The equalizer brought back fighting spirit among the Sikkim forwards, who in the next five minutes fired from all cylinders which resulted into second goal in the 45th minute through international player, Jotin Singh. Being witnessed by non other than special invitee of the match, Major General D L Choudhary of 26th Infantry Division and hundreds of other supporters in green, Services boys were not in a mood to give up and they continued fighting for an equalizer. Ultimately, Services managed to score that changed the course of the match in the 69th minute. Getting a pass from right flank, L B Victor hit a power-packed shot from left flank to net the ball into the right corner of goal to the surprise of entire defence line-up of Manipur. The match was also witnessed by Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation, Kavinder Gupta. Earlier, in the first match of the day of cluster-II played at M A Stadium, Orissa held Nagaland to a 2-2 draw. Orissa took the early lead over Nagaland scoring the first goal in the 51st minute after the goalless first half. A Naresh headed the ball into the goal for a beautiful goal. Nagaland equalized the score when skipper Vizo Peseyie netted the ball in the 69th minute. Nagaland then went ahead of Orissa with second goal in the 79th minute scored by Yapang. Hardly having any chance of making it into the next round of pre-quarterfinals, both Naglanad and Orissa played a fearless game which resulted into Orissa scoring the second goal in the last 90th minute. Vijay Kumar Dass scored the goal dodging the advancing goalkeeper to make it a 2-2 draw. Earlier, before the start of the match, Principal, GGM Science College, Prof Vijay Kotwal had an introduction with the teams. He was accompanied by treasurer, Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA), R K Kohli, Dr Nirmolak Singh, S M Gill, Ashok Sharma, Sardari Lal and Amarjeet Singh. |
