Man held for posing as WHO director , cheats many

Mangaluru, Aug 24: The Mangaluru City police have arrested a person from Kashmir, for cheating people by posing as director of World Health Organisation (WHO) and promising them job offers at WHO.
The man has been identified as Shaukat Ahmed Lone, a resident of Ganjipura village in Kashmir, was arrested along with his driver, informed PS Harsha, city police commissioner.
Shaukat was accused of cheating several persons across the country. He took huge sum from people by promising jobs at WHO. The money he took from each person ranges from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Harsha also pointed out that the suspect was also involved in activities against national interest and a thorough probe was on. Apart from that, Shaukat has also uploaded his profile on matrimonial site claiming to be the director of WHO, cheated several women too.
Acting on a tip-off, police officials from all stations were alerted about two suspects roaming in a car. Barke police intercepted a car near Navabharat Circle, which had fake name plate and written as WHO director. They were arrested on August 17.
During interrogation, Shaukat Ahmed Lone had identified himself as Basith Shah, a resident of Mumbai and claimed to be the director of WHO and Singh as his driver. "During the investigation, it was learnt through WHO sources that he was not the director of the UN agency."
Further investigations revealed that Shaukat, who passed PUC, had posed as a doctor too. He made all fake certificates including that of MBBS/ MS/ MCH - Gold medalist and the director, World Health Organization. The vehicle carried the registration number MCI/2013/3184. While his driver Singh revealed that he was working for Shaukat for the past two years.
Harsha added that Shaukat, who was into lavish lifestyle, used to stay in swanky hotels. They had come to the city on August 16 and was arrested next day. According to priliminary investigation, Shaukat has cheated several people from many states and also exploited girls in a pretext of marrying them. Police have urged public to inform police if they come across any instances of cheating by Shaukat.
Barke Police have booked him under Indian Penal Code 170, 171, 419, 420, 34 and The State emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act, Harsha said.
