Opposition delegation stopped at Srinagar airport and sent back
8/26/2019 12:15:33 AM

There was drama on Srinagar Airport when a delegation of opposition parties was not allowed to enter into the valley and was sent back. It was on Saturday stopped at the Srinagar airport and sent back to Delhi soon after they landed here in view of the "law and order situation". The 12-member delegation included Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, CPI leader D Raja, CPM's Sitaram Yechury, Congress leaders Anand Sharma and KC Venugopal, LJD chief Sharad Yadav, Trinamool Congress leader Dinesh Trivedi, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, NCP leader Majeed Memon, RJD's Manoj Jha and D Kupendra Reddy of Janata Dal (Secular. Reports had revealed that Governor, S.P. Malik, was claimed by Rahul Ganhi to visit Srinagar and take the stock of the situation..
The delegation arrived at the Srinagar airport around 1 pm, but was not allowed to move out of the airport, officials here said. The delegation later returned to Delhi after about two hours. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was seen waving his hands at the airport to express disgust over the refusal of the permission being rejected by the Government. Some of the opposition leaders said that if the Government claimed that the situation was normal why it did not allow them to visit Srinagar...The Government sources besides intelligence agencies has reported that once the opposition delegation was allowed to visit Srinagar, especially downtown the members of the delegation would create problems.
In Delhi, Rahul said a few days back he was invited by the Governor to visit J&K and that he had accepted his invitation. "We wanted to get a sense of what people are going through, but we were not allowed beyond the airport." Hitting out at the government, he said, "Press people with us were badly handled and beaten up. It is clear that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not normal..Well when the Governor permitted Rahul Gandhi to visit Kashmir he had thought that Rahul was alone and he could not create problems. But when other members wanted to visit Kashmir the members of the delegation were stopped at the airport.. The government says situation is normal. But then they don't allow leaders to visit J&K? Haven't seen such a contradiction. If things are normal there, why aren't we allowed to visit?" Azad asked..The Government too the members of the delegation by the cuff when asked where were they when several security personnel were killed and when Burhan Wani was slain in an encounter. This indicates that the opposition delegation of members were bent upon kicking up incidents of violence.
