| Vaishno Devi pilgrimage up by 4 Lakh in five months | | Likely to cross 1 crore mark this year: Officials | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 2 The influx of pilgrims to Shri Mata Vaishnoo Devi has registered a steep increase this year with the number of yatris having Darshan at the shrine during first five months going up by 4 lakh than the corresponding period last year. Official sources said that this year 26 Lakh pilgrims visited the shrine during the first five months against 22 Lakh during the same period last year. The officials attribute the yearly increase in the number of pilgrims to the better facilities being provided by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Board to the visiting pilgrims. They said the increase in the influx witnessed in first five months indicates that the number of Yatris visiting the Shrine would cross the whooping 1 crore mark this year. The Board headed by Jammu and Kashmir Governor S K Sinha has recently introduced a new scheme for special-priority darshan at the cave shrine against payment. The 'atka darshan' process started midnight Saturday, offers special-priority tickets under different categories on the model of Tirupati shrine, the official said. Many in the community have raised eyebrows over the introduction of the new scheme, describing it as 'commercialization' of the faith. |
