| In their desperation, Geelani, APDP seek help from Pak, Nepal Maoists | | | Early Times Special Correspondemt Jammu | June 2 News Analysis Sensing that the poll boycott call given by the hard line faction of Hurriyat Conference led by him is not going to succeed, Sayeed Ali Shaw Geelani has in his desperation sought Pak help in effecting the poll boycott. He has appealed to the leadership and media in Pakistan to help create an atmosphere to achieve this objective. Addressing a telephonic conference from Srinagar to Muzaffarabad based journalists, the hardcore secessionist and Islamic fundamentalist leader Ali Shaw Geelani made a passionate appeal to the government, the media and 160 million Pakistanis to realize the significance of the campaign for boycott of the poll for the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K, support it and play their role in making up the minds of the people in Indian part of J&K for an effective boycott. Stating that an effective boycott to the forthcoming state assembly elections was bound to strengthen the freedom movement, Geelani contended that any good participation of the electorates in the assembly polls will be characterized in India as the people in Kashmir being reconciled to Kashmir being a part of India. He lamented that the support and cooperation to the Kshmiris from the Pakistan government, the political leadership, the media and the people in general in that country was not up to the mark and that was why the Kashmiris were getting disappointed. The observers characterize Geelani's seeking help from Pakistan for effecting boycott of the elections in the state by the Kashmiris as betraying his frustration and realization that until all options are used, the overall turn out in the electorates for casting their votes will be quite encouraging for India and the ruling dispensation in the state. The decision by the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference not to launch any campaign for poll boycott this time as well as the announcement by the United Jehad Council Chief Salahuddin that the guns will not be used to deter the people from exercising their franchise in the forthcoming state assembly elections, is causing a good deal of anxiety and frustration to Sayeed Geelani, who feels that the call, given by him and the concerted campaign launched by his faction of the secessionists against the polls alone will not cut much ice. In the meanwhile the hardcore secessionists in Kashmir, in their desperation over the security forces eliminating more and more outfits of terrorists have now sought the help of the Maoists in Nepal, who are going to lead the new regime in that country. In a significant move the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) last week appealed the newly elected Chairman of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Dr. Pushpakumar Dahal alias Prachanda not to allow engagement of Nepalese in Indian Armed Forces, as they are allegedly used to quell the ongoing freedom movement in Kashmir, "We appeal Prachanda to stop unleashing Nepali national (Gorkhas) on Kashmiris in their war on the struggle for right to self determination," APDP Spokesperson Ghulam Nabi Mir told the media persons in Srinagar. Mir said as a leader of the revolution in Nepal which saw thousands of people die for the just cause in Nepal, Prachanda is aware of the plight of subjugated and expiated people of Kashmir and hence he should not allow Gorkhas of Nepal to be used as a mercenary force to crush a just and a popular struggle of people in Kashmir. This is just another futile attempt by the secessionists and militants in Kashmir to create dissention within the Indian army by appealing to sub national sentiments of a community, whereas the fact remains that the Gorkhas recruited in Indian army are Indian nationals, as they have acquired nationality of this country. They are the brave soldiers, who have amply demonstrated their valour and fighting spirit in many wars, including before the freedom of India, for the British and after Independence for independent India in the wars against China in 1962 as well as against Pakistan in 1947, 1965 and 1971. Their Indian nationalism and patriotism has remained always above board like any other soldier in the Indian army, belonging to any community and hailing from any region of the country. |
