| Santosh Trophy: Services, Goa, Karnataka in Quarterfinals | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 2 With the victory of Services, Goa and Karnataka in the knockout stages today, the quarterfinals line-up has been drawn in the 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy underway at different venues of Jammu and Srinagar. Now, divided into two groups of A and B, all the eight teams shall be playing the league round starting from June five. While the seeded sides of Punjab, Kerela, Bengal and Maharashtra have already find a place in the quarterfinal groups, the four winners of the eight different clusters will be allotted groups tomorrow. The four other teams, which reached the quarterfinals after struggling in the first two rounds are Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Karnataka and Services. Earlier, in the pre-quarterfinal played at GGM Science College, here Services stunned Tamil Nadu inflicting a humiliating 5-0 defeat. International footballer, Shaji Di Silva made hat trick to become second player of the tournament to achieve the distinction. The first hat trick was scored by Riju of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu which defended well in the first half and also made good moves, virtually failed in countering the onslaught of the forward line of Services thus conceded four goals after the breather. Shafi scored his first goal in the 14th minute to provide his side an edge with 1-0 lead at the end of first half. He then netted two more goals in the 51st and 54th minute. Four goal for Services came through S Raleng in the 81st minute. Mahesh Rai was the man who converted the fifth goal on a rebound from out side the penalty area in the 86th minute. Today’s pre-quarterfinal match was witnessed beside others by Divisional Commisssioner, Sudanshu Pandey, Inspector General of Police (IGP), K Rajendra, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Alok Puri and host of other guests. In other two pre-quarterfinal matches played at Polo Ground, Srinagar, Goa defeated Railways 4-3 in tie-breaker while Karnataka outplayed Haryana 2-1. |
